The time of beginning of fruit ripening on the previous season's canes of 'Pearl' is mid-season whereas that for 'Unermudliche' is late and that for 'Lagorai' is late to very late. The fruiting period on the current season's canes of 'Pearl' is short whereas it is medium to long for 'Lagorai'.
PLANT: arching growth habit, many current season canes, bears fruit on previous season's cane in summer and on current season's cane in autumn, early to mid-season vegetative bud burst
VERY YOUNG SHOOT: weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of apex during rapid growth, mid-season emergence
FRUITING LATERAL: semi-erect attitude, medium length
CURRENT SEASON`S CANE: medium to long, medium degree of glaucosity, medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, short to medium internode length, short to medium length of vegetative bud

FRUIT: begins ripening mid-season on previous season's cane, begins ripening very late on current season's cane, long, broad, large to very large length to width ratio, conical in lateral view, dark red, medium degree of glossiness, medium to firm, weak to medium adherence to plug, long fruiting period on previous season's cane, short fruiting period on current season's cane
Origin & Breeding History: 'Pearl' originated from a controlled cross pollination conducted in February and March of 2009 in Oakland, Maryland, USA. The cross was conducted between the varieties 'ZGN-e1', as the female parent, and 'XN-1vf', as the male parent. The resulting seeds were germinated and seedlings were grown in field trials in Cartaya, Huelva, Spain. An individual seedling was selected from the field in Cartaya in March 2011 and coded as DKX-12EF. Selection was based on fruit size, firmness, flavour, colour, appearance and ability to ship and store. The variety was then subsequently named 'Pearl' and put forward for commercialization.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Pearl' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2014/2771, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office, in Angers, France. The trial was conducted by the Bundessortenamt, in Prufstelle Wurzen, Germany, from 2016 to 2017.
