Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Poulduce' (Tivoli 150)

Summary: The leaf of 'Poulcas033' is smaller than the leaf of 'Poulduce'. The flower of 'Poulcas033' is smaller in diameter with a greater number of petals than the flower of 'Poulduce'. The petal of 'Poulcas033' is smaller than the petal of 'Poulduce'. The colour of the inner side of the petal of 'Poulcas033' is light yellow with white towards the margin fading with age to white throughout whereas the inner side of the petal of 'Poulduce' is yellow at the base fading to light yellow towards the apical margin.

LEAF: medium to dark green on upper side, no anthocyanin colouration, weak glossiness of upper side, weak undulation of margin
TERMINAL LEAFLET: medium elliptic shape, obtuse base, acuminate apex

SEPAL: absent or very weak extensions
FLOWER BUD: elliptic shape in longitudinal section, white (RHS 155B) with light yellow (RHS 5D) at base
FLOWER: double type, light yellow colour group, yellow green to light yellow (RHS 4C-D) at centre, dense petals, round shape when viewed from above, upper and lower part are flattened convex when viewed from the side, strong fragrance
PETAL: no reflexing one-by-one as flower opens, obovate shape, weak incisions at apex, absent or very weak undulation, intensity of colour of inner side is uniform, inner side is light yellow (whiter than RHS 4D) with white (RHS 155B) towards margin fading with age to white (RHS 155B) throughout, small and yellow (RHS 5B) basal spot on inner side, colour of outer side is not clearly different from colour of inner side
OUTER STAMEN: filament predominantly medium yellow

Origin & Breeding History: 'Poulcas033' originated from a controlled cross conducted during the summer of 2003 at the breeding facilities of Poulsen Roser A/S in Fredensborg, Denmark, as part of a breeding program to hybridize rose varieties for commercial glasshouse and nursery culture. The cross involved two unnamed seedlings. The resultant seeds were planted in December 2001 and germinated during the winter and early spring. In the spring of 2002, one seedling was selected for its compact and vigorous growth when propagated on its own root, profusion of light yellow flowers, suitability to open air nursery container culture, resistance to typical rose diseases, and fragrance.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Poulcas033' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2014 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial consisted of a total of 8 plants of the candidate variety and 6 plants of the reference variety. All plants were grown from bare-rooted plants and transplanted into 13 litre containers on April 4, 2014. Unless otherwise indicated, observations and measurements were taken from 8 plants of the candidate variety and 6 plants of the reference variety, or 10 parts of plants of each variety on June 17, 2014. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
