Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Notwoodtwo'

Summary: The plants of 'Gandini van Aart' have an upright growth habit while those of 'Notwoodtwo' have a semi upright growth habit. The petiole of 'Gandini van Aart' is medium to long whereas that of 'Notwoodtwo' is very short to short. The flower of 'Gandini van Aart' has few to medium number of petaloid stamens whereas the flower of 'Notwoodtwo' has many petaloid stamens.

LEAF BLADE: short to medium length, very narrow to narrow, length to width ratio is very elongated, acute base, light green on upper side, shallow lobing, medium degree of undulation of margin, few margin incisions, no variegation

FLOWER: semi-double type, few to medium number of petaloid stamens, medium size
OUTERMOST PETAL: moderately ascending attitude, touching or slightly overlapping arrangement
PETAL: medium length, very narrow to narrow, moderately elongated, white (RHS NN155B) with very pale red purple along veins on inner side, absent or weak incisions of margin, weak undulation

Origin & Breeding History: 'Gandini van Aart' originated as a naturally occurring branch mutation of the Hibiscus syriacus variety 'Gandini Santiago'. The new variety was discovered and developed by the breeder, Marinus Adrianus Cornelis van Aart in Oudenbosch, Netherlands in August 2012. The new variety 'Gandini van Aart' was discovered amongst a bed of containers of 'Gandini Santiago' plants at a nursery in Oudenbosch and was selected based on plant growth habit, flower type, flower colour and flower sterility. Asexual propagation by softwood cuttings was first conducted in August 2012, in Oudenbosch, Netherlands.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Gandini van Aart' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2014/1645, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trial was conducted by the National Institute of Agricultural Botany in Cambridge, United Kingdom in 2015 and 2016. Colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
