Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Pure Joy'

Summary: The stem of 'Pride and Joy' has a medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration while that of 'Pure Joy' has a weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The inflorescence of 'Pride and Joy' is taller than that of 'Pure Joy'. The inner side of the petal of 'Pride and Joy' is medium blue pink whereas that of 'Pure Joy' is light blue pink. The gynoecium of the floret of 'Pride and Joy' is darker purple and darker blue pink than that of 'Pure Joy'.

FLOWERING PERIOD: late in the season, medium to long
INFLORESCENCE: cyme type, terminal position only, erect attitude
FLOWER: petal arrangement is very open, very few petals, five petals

Origin & Breeding History: 'Pride and Joy' was discovered as a naturally occurring sport mutation on a plant of Sedum variety 'Pure Joy' at Walter Gardens, Inc. in Zeeland, Michigan, USA on August 17, 2016. The sport was cut from the mother plant in autumn of 2016 at Walters Gardens, Inc. and further propagated by cuttings. It was selected at the time of discovery for its plant growth habit, distinct and stable foliage variegation, flower colour and height and reblooming capabilities. 'Pride and Joy' was initially propagated by cuttings in September of 2017.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Pride and Joy' was conducted outdoors during the summer of 2022 at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario. The trial included a total of 15 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown in 22 cm pots spaced 45 cm apart. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety during the last week of August 2022. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
