Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Brilliant'

Summary: 'Little Princess' produces a shorter and narrower plant than 'Brilliant'. The pubescence on the stem of 'Little Princess' is sparse to medium while it is absent in the variety 'Brilliant'. The leaf lobing in 'Little Princess' is deeper than in 'Brilliant'. 'Little Princess' has a shorter flower length than 'Brilliant'. 'Little Princess' has a lighter violet flower colour with darker violet towards the base while 'Brilliant' has darker violet flower colour with white near the base.

Description:

'Little Princess' is a perennial Sidalcea variety. 'Little Princess' has an upright-bushy growth habit with a medium number of branches. The stems are light-green in colour and medium in thickness. Stem anthocyanin colouration is absent and the stems are medium in glaucosity with sparse to medium pubescence. The leaves are whorled to rosette in arrangement and have a reniform leaf blade shape. The leaf blade has an obtuse shaped apex, auriculate base and lobed margin. There is no pubescence on the lower side of the leaf blade. The upper and lower side of the leaf blade is medium green in colour with very weak glaucosity. There is no variegation in the leaf blade. The petiole is present and has weak anthocyanin colouration. There is more than one flowering period. It flowers in mid season with a medium length of flowering time. The inflorescence type is a raceme with both terminal and axillary flower positions. The inflorescence attitude is erect. There are five petals in each floret which are touching to overlapping. The shape of the petal is obovate with a retuse shape of the apex. There is no pubescence on the upper side of the petal. The main colour of the upper and lower side of the petal is pale violet with a slightly darker violet colour in the center of the petal towards the base.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Little Princess' was selected from a seedling population of Sidalcea oregana in 1994. It was selected for its improved form/habit and floral traits.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Little Princess' were conducted in Oxford Station, Ontario during the summers of 2000 and 2001. The trials consisted of ten plants per variety grown under field conditions. Plants within the row were spaced 0.4 metres and rows were spaced 1.0 metre apart. Measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
