Variety used for comparison: 'S18-R6'
Summary: The plants of 'S16-F5' are shorter than those of 'S18-R6'. 'S16-F5' begins flowering mid-season whereas 'S18-R6' begins mid to late season. The 100 seed weight of 'S16-F5' is heavier than that of 'S18-R6'.
HYPOCOTYL: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration
PLANT: indeterminate growth type, erect branch attitude, begins flowering mid-season, matures mid-season
STEM: grey pubescence on middle third
LATERAL LEAFLET: pointed ovate shape
POD: light brown
SEED: medium size, spherical shape, yellow ground colour of testa
DISEASE REACTION: resistant to Phytophthora rot (Phytophthora meagasperma f. sp. glycinea Races 3 and 7) and Soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines Races 1, 3 and 14)
Origin & Breeding History: 'S16-F5' (experimental designation AR1100280) originated from the cross 36299/72978 conducted in 2007 in Arva, Ontario. The F1 and F2 generations were grown in a winter nursery in Hawaii in 2007-2008. The F3 was grown in a winter contra season nursery in Chile in 2008-2009. In the summer of 2009, single plants were selected from the F4, with the F5 being grown out in single row yield trials at Arva, Ontario during the 2010 growing season. One of these lines, identified as AR1100280, was selected for further testing based on superior agronomic characteristics. In 2011, a progeny row increase was planted and carefully rogued for off-types, harvested individually and bulked after each individual row was observed. AR1100280 was evaluated in wide area testing during the 2012 to 2013 growing seasons. Selection criteria included yield performance, disease resistances and quality characteristics.
Tests & Trials: The tests and trials for 'S16-F5' were conducted at Syngenta Canada, Inc., Arva, Ontario during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons. The plots consisted of 2 replicates per variety containing 2 rows per replicate with a row length of 5 meters and a row spacing of 0.75 meters. Measured characteristics were based on 20 height measurements per variety, and 10 seed weight measurements per variety.
