Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Strongfield', 'AAC Cabri', 'AAC Raymore' and 'CDC Carbide'

Summary: The intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the coleoptile of 'CDC Credence' is absent or very weak whereas it is weak for 'AAC Raymore', weak to medium for 'Strongfield' and 'CDC Carbide' and of medium intensity for 'AAC Cabri'. At booting, the flag leaf of 'CDC Credence' has a medium degree of glaucosity while the flag leaf of 'AAC Cabri' and 'AAC Raymore' has an absent or very weak to weak degree of glaucosity and for 'CDC Carbide', the flag leaf has an absent or very weak degree of glaucosity. At booting, the frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves is medium for 'CDC Credence' whereas it is absent or very low for 'Strongfield' and 'AAC Raymore' and low for 'AAC Cabri'. The anthocyanin colouration of the flag leaf auricles for 'CDC Credence' is of weak intensity whereas it is of strong intensity for that of 'CDC Carbide'. The plants of 'CDC Credence' head later than those of 'Strongfield'. At maturity, the plants of 'CDC Credence' are taller than those of 'Strongfield' and 'AAC Raymore'. In cross-section, the straw pith of 'CDC Credence' is thin to medium whereas it is filled for 'AAC Cabri' and 'AAC Raymore'. The awns of 'CDC Credence' are brown whereas they are white for 'Strongfield', 'AAC Cabri' and 'CDC Carbide'. The hairiness on the convex surface of the apical rachis segment of 'CDC Credence' is of medium density whereas it is sparse for 'Strongfield'. 'CDC Credence' has a long lower glume beak whereas it is of medium length for that of 'AAC Raymore' and 'CDC Carbide'.

Description:

PLANT: durum wheat, spring type, erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, matures late in the season

SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium to strong glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM: weak to medium glaucosity, weakly curved neck
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin to medium pith in cross-section, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, yellow

SPIKE: strong glaucosity at heading, parallel-sided shape in profile, dense, white at maturity, erect attitude, medium density of hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: brown, longer than spike, slightly spreading attitude
LOWER GLUME: long, medium width, glabrous to slightly pubescent, sparse to medium extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: medium width, strongly elevated with second point present
LOWER GLUME BEAK: long, moderately curved
LOWEST LEMMA: straight to slightly curved beak

KERNEL: amber, large to very large, long, medium width, elliptical shape, angular cheek shape, short to medium brush hairs, medium to wide crease, deep crease
GERM: medium size, broad elliptical shape

DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to Common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia foetida), Loose smut (Ustilago tritici), Leaf rust (Puccina recondita), Stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. Tritici ) and Stripe rust (Puccina striiformis) and moderately susceptible to Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium species)

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Credence' (experimental designations 'D06.53.120' and 'DT583') originated from the cross between 'Strongfield' and 'DT763', as the female parent, and 'Brigade', as the male parent, conducted in the summer of 2006 at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The F1 generation was increased at a contra-season nursery in New Zealand. The resulting F2 plants, grown in a nursery in Saskatoon in 2007, were bulked threshed and the F3 generation was increased in New Zealand. In 2008, the F4 generation was planted in a nursery in Saskatoon where 381 single spikes were selected and grown as F5 head rows in Saskatoon in 2009. From these head rows, a line designated as 'D06.53.120' was selected on the basis of plant height, maturity and straw strength. In 2010 and 2011, 'D06.53.120' was evaluated for agronomic traits and disease resistance in various locations in Saskatoon, Manitoba and Alberta. 'D06.53.120' was further evaluated in the Durum Wheat B Test and in the Durum Wheat Co-operative Tests from 2013 to 2015.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials of 'CDC Credence' were conducted during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons at the Crop Science Research Farm, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A two replicate, randomized complete block design was planted with each replicate consisting of 5 rows spaced 20 cm apart. The plot size was 4 square metres with a density of 300 plants per square metre. Measured characteristics are based on 20 measurements per variety, per year. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
