Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Ryley', '5701PR', '5702PR' and 'NRG010'

Summary: At booting, the frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves is low for 'CDC Terrain' whereas it is absent or very low for '5701PR' and 'NRG010' and medium for 'AAC Ryley' and '5702PR'. The flag leaf of 'CDC Terrain' is shorter than that of 'AAC Ryley' and '5702PR' and wider than that of '5701PR' and '5702PR'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the flag leaf auricles of 'CDC Terrain' is very strong whereas it is absent or very weak for '5701PR' and '5702PR' and weak for 'AAC Ryley' and 'NRG010'. At maturity, the plants of 'CDC Terrain' are taller than those of 'AAC Ryley' and '5701PR'. The spikes of 'CDC Terrain' are shorter than those of 'AAC Ryley', '5702PR' and 'NRG010'. The extent of the internal hairs of the lower glume for 'CDC Terrain' is sparse to medium whereas it is medium to dense for 'NRG010', dense for '5701PR' and dense to very dense for 'AAC Ryley' and '5702PR'.

Description:

PLANT: common hard red spring type, erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, matures mid-season

SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous lower leaf sheaths and blades

FLAG LEAF: very strong anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium to strong glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM: medium to strong glaucosity, straight neck
STRAW: thin in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration at maturity

SPIKE: weak glaucosity at heading, tapering to parallel sided shape in profile, medium density, white at maturity, erect attitude, sparse to medium hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: equal to length of spike, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME: long, medium width, glabrous, medium to dense extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: medium width, straight
LOWER GLUME BEAK: long, strongly curved
LOWEST LEMMA: straight to slightly curved beak

KERNEL: medium red, medium size, medium to long, medium width, oval, rounded to angular cheek, medium to long brush hairs, crease of medium width and depth
GERM: medium size, broad elliptical shape

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Terrain' (experimental designations 'HY04.27.070' and 'HY537') originated from the cross between 'HY669' and '5701PR' conducted in the summer of 2004 at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The F1 generation was increased at a contra-season nursery near Christchurch, New Zealand. The F2 and F3 generations were increased in bulk in Saskatoon and near Christchurch in 2005. In 2006, F4 plants with suitable plant height and resistance to leaf and stem rust were selected from a nursery in Saskatoon and these were planted as F4:5 head rows in a leaf and stem rust nursery in 2007. In 2008, five spikes were selected based on plant height and disease resistance. The selected spikes were grown as head rows in leaf and stem rust nurseries in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and evaluated for Fusarium head blight resistance in Carman, Manitoba. In 2009, 'HY04.27.070' was identified and grown in unreplicated yield trials at the Kernen Crop Research Farm near Saskatoon and evaluated in endemic common bunt and leaf and stem rust in Saskatoon as well as Fusarium Head Blight nurseries in Manitoba. 'HY04.27.070' was evaluated for agronomic traits in replicated preliminary yield trials in 2010 and in advanced yield trials in 2011 at various locations in Saskatchewan and Alberta. In both years, disease resistance trials were also conducted in Saskatoon and Carman, Manitoba. 'HY04.27.070' was evaluated in the High Yield Red Wheat Co-operative Trials from 2012 to 2014.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials of 'CDC Terrain' were conducted during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons at the Crop Science Field Laboratory, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A two replicate, randomized complete block design was planted with each replicate consisting of 5 rows spaced 20 cm apart. The plot size was 4 square metres with a density of 300 plants per square metre. Measured characteristics are based on 20 measurements per variety, per year. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
