Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Unity', 'CDC Abound' and '859CL'

Summary: At the 4 leaf stage, the intensity of the anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile of 'CDC Cordon CLPlus' is strong whereas the coleoptile of '859CL' has no anthocyanin colouration. 'CDC Cordon CLPlus' has a longer flag leaf than 'Unity'. The flag leaf auricle of 'CDC Cordon CLPlus' has an absent to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the flag leaf auricle of 'CDC Abound' has a very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. In cross-section, the pith at maturity is thin for 'CDC Cordon CLPlus' while the pith of 'Unity' is of medium thickness to filled.

Description:

PLANT: hard red common spring type, erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, low to medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves

SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, glabrous to slightly pubescent sheath, glabrous leaf blade

FLAG LEAF: absent to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the auricle, weak to medium glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM: strong to very strong glaucosity, moderately curved neck
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section, yellow

SPIKE: absent or very weak to weak glaucosity at heading, tapering in profile, medium density, white to yellow at maturity, erect attitude, medium to dense hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: white, shorter than spike
LOWER GLUME: short to medium length, medium width, glabrous to slightly pubescent, sparse to medium extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: medium to wide, straight to elevated
LOWER GLUME BEAK: slightly curved, medium to long
LOWEST LEMMA: straight to slightly curved beak

KERNEL: light to medium red, medium to large, medium length and width, oval shape, slightly angular to angular cheek shape, short brush hairs, medium wide and medium deep crease
GERM: medium size, round to oval shape

DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to Common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia), moderately resistant to Loose smut (Ustilago tritici), Leaf rust (Puccina recondita) and Stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici), moderately resistant to moderately susceptible to Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum), moderately susceptible to Stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis)

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Cordon CLPlus' (experimental designation 'IR10072') is the result of a cross between 'Unity' and proprietary line 'IR05038' in the winter of 2005-2006 at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan. The F1 seed was grown in the field during the summer of 2006. In the winter of 2006-2007, the F2 seed was grown as a bulk in New Zealand. In 2007, the F3 seed was grown in a bulk nursery in Saskatoon. In the winter of 2007-2008, the F4 and F5 seed was advanced via single seed descent in a greenhouse at Saskatoon. In the summer of 2008, F6 hills were selected for rust resistance, plant type, and straw strength. In the summer of 2009, the seed from a bulked F6 hill was entered into an unreplicated yield trial nursery and selected for yield, height, and straw strength. In the summer of 2010, 'CDC Cordon CLPlus' was evaluated as 'IR10072' in a replicated yield test. From 2011 to 2015, 'IR10072' was evaluated for yield.

Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials of 'CDC Cordon CLPlus' were conducted during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A four replicate, randomized complete block design was planted with each replicate consisting of 5 rows. The plot size was 4.5 square metres with a density of 1400 plants per plot. Measured characteristics are based on 20 measurements per variety. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
