Origin & Breeding History: '25W38' originated from a three-way cross made between proprietary selections in a controlled environment by Pioneer Hi-Bred International in Windfall, Indiana. The final cross was made in 2002. It was further developed using the pedigree method of plant breeding. The F1 generation was grown in a transplant nursery, bulked and grown at 2 locations in Indiana, USA in 2004. Plant selections were conducted at the F2 generation with resulting F3 head rows selected and bulked in 2006. In 2007, F4 bulk selections were grown and F5 plant selections resulted in F6 head rows grown at 2 locations in Indiana, USA in 2008. Preliminary yield testing began in 2009 at the F7 generation and continued through to the F14 generation in 2016. Selection criteria was based on disease resistance, plant type, plant height, head type, straw strength, maturity, grain yield, test weight as well as milling and baking characteristics.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for '25W38' were conducted during the 2016 and 2018 growing seasons in Georgetown, ON. Plots consisted of 6 rows, with a row length of 6.0 metres and row spacing of 0.3 metres. There were 3 replications arranged in an RCB design. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 24 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student's t-test.
