Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'BW928', 'Carberry', 'AAC Viewfield' and 'AAC Wheatland'
Summary: At the 5 to 9 tiller stage, the plant of 'AAC Hockley' has a semi-erect growth habit whereas the plant of 'BW928' has a semi-prostrate growth habit. At booting, the intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the auricles on the flag leaf is absent or very weak for 'AAC Hockley' whereas it is of medium intensity for 'AAC Viewfield'. The flag leaf of 'AAC Hockley' is narrower than that of 'AAC Viewfield' and 'AAC Wheatland'. At heading, the spike of 'AAC Hockley' has a strong degree of glaucosity whereas the spikes of 'BW928' and 'Carberry' have a medium degree of glaucosity. At maturity, the plants, including the spike and awns, of 'AAC Hockley' are taller than the plants of 'AAC Viewfield'. The spike, excluding the awns, of 'AAC Hockley' is shorter than that of 'BW928'. The lower glume of 'AAC Hockley' is narrower than those of 'Carberry', 'AAC Viewfield' and 'AAC Wheatland'.
Description:
PLANT: common wheat, spring type, semi-erect growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, heads emerge mid-season
SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheaths and blades of lower leaves
FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium glaucosity of sheath and lower side of blade, glabrous blade and sheath
CULM NECK: medium degree of glaucosity at heading
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration
SPIKE: strong glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, medium density, white at maturity
AWNS: shorter than spike length, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME: narrow
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow, slightly sloping to straight
LOWER GLUME BEAK: short, slightly curved shape
KERNEL: hard red type, dark red
DISEASE REACTION: moderately resistant to resistant to Fusarium Head Blight (Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium spp.)
INSECT REACTION: susceptible to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge (Sitodiplosis mosellana)
Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Hockley' (experimental designations B1264&AF054 and BW5044) originated from the cross between 'BW928' and 'CDC Plentiful' made in 2012 at the Swift Current Research and Development Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Double haploid lines were generated using the maize pollen method and haploid plantlets were screened with a molecular marker associated to the Fusarium head blight resistance gene Fhb1. In 2013, 115 DH1 lines were grown in 2 metre long rows near Irwell, New Zealand and assessed for maturity, plant height, resistance to lodging and shattering. In 2014, 78 selected DH2 lines were assessed for agronomic performance in nurseries near Swift Current and Stewart Valley, Saskatchewan and in Lethbridge, Alberta. Disease responses were further assessed in specialized nurseries near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba and Swift Current whereas the seed from yield trials were assessed for grain quality and kernel characteristics in 2014. One DH2 line designated as B1264&AF054, identified as meeting all selection criteria at each stage, was then evaluated in the Western Bread Wheat A1 test in 2015, the Western Bread Wheat B test in 2016, and as BW5044 in the Western Bread Wheat C Registration test from 2017 to 2019. Breeder seed production commenced in 2017 near Swift Current, Saskatchewan.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'AAC Hockley' were conducted at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Swift Current Research and Development Centre during the 2019 and 2021 growing seasons. There were 4 replicates of 4.6 square metre plots arranged in an RCB Design. Each plot consisted of 4 rows, each 4 metres long, with an inter-row spacing of 23 cm. The planting density was 220 plants per metre squared, with 3200 plants per variety grown per year. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on LSD values. Disease and insect reaction ratings were provided through the Disease Evaluation Team of the Prairie Recommending Committee for Wheat, Rye and Triticale from the registration trials conducted from 2017 to 2019.
