Method of production claims on food labels
Overview

"Method of production" refers to how a product was raised, produced, prepared (definition), etc. Claims related to the method of production are subject to subsection 5(1) of the Food and Drugs Act (FDA) and subsection 6(1) of the Safe Food for Canadians Act (SFCA), which prohibit statements and claims that are false, misleading, deceptive or that create an erroneous impression regarding the product. In the case of the SFCA, this includes the product';s method of manufacture or preparation. In addition, some method of production claims have specific regulatory requirements that apply to them.
