June 1, 2017: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is consulting consumers and industry stakeholders on a proposed change to the way that wine blended in Canada is labelled.
The Food and Drug Regulations currently require that a clear indication of the country of origin be declared on the wine label.
The CFIA has heard that the statement "Cellared in Canada" is not informative and potentially misleading to consumers.
New statements have been proposed to replace "Cellared in Canada". These statements are intended to provide consumers with the information they need to make an informed purchasing decision.
Proposed new statements:
Primarily imported wines: "International blend from imported and domestic wines"
Primarily domestic wines: "International blend from domestic and imported wines"
During the consultation period, June 1 – 30, 2017, we want to know if you support the replacement of the "Cellared in Canada" label statement with "International blend from imported and domestic wines" for wines blended in Canada. In the case of wines primarily of domestic origin, the statement "International blend from domestic and imported wines" would be used.
Submissions will be accepted through the online survey until June 30, 2017.
