May 4, 2017 – Ottawa, ON – Canadian Food Inspection Agency

The purpose of this notice is to advise industry that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is expanding the scope of testing for two analyses in therapeutants monitoring for aquacultured fish and crustaceans.

As of May 22nd, 2017, the CFIA will begin testing aquacultured fish and crustaceans for these compounds, in addition to the therapeutants it currently tests.

Expanding the scope will improve monitoring for therapeutant use in aquaculture.

What this means for you

The CFIA reminds importers and domestic processors of their legal responsibility to ensure that the aquacultured fish and fish products they import or process meet Canadian regulatory requirements.

According to the Food and Drug Regulations, residues of these compounds are not permitted to be used in fish product intended for consumption as food. Aquacultured products containing these residues are in violation of the Fish Inspection Regulations and the Food and Drugs Act. The CFIA will take appropriate regulatory action on non-compliant products.
