Importing from specific countries

Although the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR) came into force on January 15, 2019, certain requirements are being phased in over the following 12 to 30 months. For more information, refer to the SFCR timelines.

For certain food commodities only specific foreign establishments or suppliers are permitted to export to Canada. This is based on prior CFIA approval of their country's inspection system.

The CFIA recognizes the following countries as having a food safety system that provides the same level of protection as Canada's regulatory system. Non-resident importers who are subject to oversight by these food safety systems are eligible to hold an import licence – but only for the specified foods. For more information on non-resident importers refer to non-resident importers.
