Northern giant hornet – Vespa mandarinia

Asian giant hornet

The northern giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia, formerly known as Asian giant hornet) is native to eastern Asia. It is a predator of other wasps, large insects and honeybees. This hornet was detected in Canada for the first time in August 2019 in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

The CFIA restricts the intentional import of northern giant hornet into Canada under the Plant Protection Act.

The CFIA will review the requirements as more information becomes available about the hornet's risk to plant health.
