Asian giant hornet – Vespa mandarinia
The Asian giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia) is native to eastern Asia. It is a predator of other wasps, large insects and honeybees. Asian giant hornet was detected in Canada for the first time in August 2019 in Nanaimo, British Columbia.
The CFIA restricts the intentional import of Asian giant hornet into Canada under the Plant Protection Act.
The CFIA will review the requirements as more information becomes available about the hornet's risk to plant health.
