Latest information: Detection of genetically modified herbicide tolerant wheat in Alberta

The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture announced today it is lifting the suspension on the tender and sale of Canadian wheat, following confirmation that no GM wheat (MON 71200) has been detected in Canadian wheat and wheat flour.

The South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) announced today that the suspension of the distribution and sale of Canadian wheat is lifted, as no unapproved GM wheat (MON 71200) has been detected in Canadian wheat and wheat flour that had been temporarily halted in South Korea. MFDS will continue testing incoming shipments of Canadian wheat and wheat flour until further notice.

June 22, 2018

On June 22, 2018, the CFIA confirmed that, based on the physical characteristics, as well as on genotyping data, the isolated finding of a few GM wheat plants, announced on June 14, 2018, is not of a durum wheat.

Durum wheat is used primarily in pasta and couscous and represents a significant share of Canadian wheat exports in some countries (for example in Italy, Morocco, Algeria). The CFIA continues to conduct research to find more information about the class or breeding history of this wheat and continues to work closely with key trading partners to ensure that they have the information they need.
