On August 18, 2020, at the Winnipeg, Manitoba Provincial Court, Hylife Foods Inc. from La Broquerie, Manitoba and Hylife Foods LP from Neepawa, Manitoba pled guilty to three charges under the Meat Inspection Regulations, 1990.
The court fined Hylife Foods Inc. and Hylife Foods LP $75,000.
Hylife Foods Inc. and Hylife Foods LP were convicted of contravening sections 62(1) and 80(b) of the Meat Inspection Regulations, in that they handled and used equipment in Neepawa, Manitoba in a manner that caused the animals avoidable distress or pain, thereby committing offences under section 21(3) of the Meat Inspection Act. They were sentenced to a fine of $25,000 per count for a total of $75,000.
The charges were laid under the former Meat Inspection Regulations, 1990 as the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations were not in force for meat slaughter activities at the time of the offences in 2018.
