Proactive Disclosure
The CFIA established the Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) in July 2004 to
respond to emerging and future animal and zoonotic disease occurrences, and in recognition
of the social, political, animal health, public health and economic consequences
associated with those occurrences.
Dr. Brian Evans is the current Chief
Veterinary Officer of Canada, the fourteenth since Confederation.
At the national level, the Office of the CVO provides:
- policy advice on animal and veterinary public health issues through collaboration with
Canada's veterinary colleges, the veterinary profession and the Office of the Chief
Public Health Officer of Canada;
- environmental scanning, international context and knowledge transfer to support the
programs and policies of the Government of Canada;
- support to the assessment and interpretation of disease occurrences in Canada and
abroad; and
- analysis of the ability of Canada's veterinary infrastructure to respond to national and
global threats to animal and human health.
The Office of the CVO serves as the primary contact point for representatives of the
World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE)'s member countries in matters related to
animal and veterinary public health.
