Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'PKMP01', 'PKMP02' and 'HAVPRTB908'

Summary: The plants of 'B0901' are medium width whereas the plants of 'PKMP02' are broad. The shape of the corolla lobe of 'B0901' is moderately elliptic whereas the lobe of 'HAVPRTB908' is narrowly elliptic. The position of the lobes of the calyx relative to the pedicel is somewhat spreading to at a right angle for 'B0901' whereas it is at a right angle to weakly reflexed for 'PKMP01'. The reflexing of the corolla lobe of 'B0901' is weak to medium whereas the reflexing of the corolla lobe of 'PKMP02' and 'HAVPRTB908' is medium to strong. The central furrow on the inner side of the corolla is weak for 'B0901' whereas it is strong for 'PKMP01'.

Description:

PLANT: flat-rounded growth habit, medium density, very short to short, medium width
RHIZOMES: present, weak vigour
STEM: no pubescence, ribbed in cross-section, light green

PETIOLE: medium to long
LEAF BLADE: very short to short, narrow to medium width, very low length to width ratio, obtuse tip, cordate base, widest towards base, weakly concave in cross-section, medium to strong toothing of margin, weak undulation of margin
UPPER SIDE OF LEAF BLADE: dark green, weak rugosity, weak glossiness, no pubescence

CALYX: no petaloid lobes, position of lobes relative to pedicel is somewhat spreading to at right angles
COROLLA: natural attitude is moderately outwards, campanulate form, only one whorl, small diameter, very short
COROLLA LOBE: moderately elliptic, short, very narrow at widest point, weak to medium reflexing, no twisting, in cross-section midpoint is weakly convex, weak central furrow on inner side, acuminate tip, colour of outer side is not markedly different from colour of outer side of corolla tube, inner side is blue violet (between RHS N87A and N87B)
COROLLA TUBE: as proportion of corolla length tube is medium length, short, when viewed in profile sides are slightly diverging towards opening, very narrow opening, blue violet (between RHS N87B and N87C) outer side, inner side is blue violet (RHS N87C) with solid or nearly so light blue violet (RHS 85D) secondary colour on basal quarter

STAMEN: whitish pollen

Origin & Breeding History: 'B0901' originated from a hybridization between an unnamed proprietary variety of Campanula portenschlagiana designated '08.98.05' and the variety 'Blue Ocean'. The hybridization was conducted in 2008 by Gert Kim Jensen in Marslev, Denmark. 'B0901' was selected in April 2010 for its flower attractiveness, compactness, high production of cuttings, and flowering during long days without vernalization.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'B0901' is based on the UPOV Report of Technical Examination, application number 2011/0541, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Anger, France. The trials were conducted by the National Institute of Agricultural Botany in Cambridge, United Kingdom in 2012. Colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
