Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Orange A-Peel' and 'Lemon A-Peel'
Summary: The leaf blade of 'DL1501' is larger than that of 'Lemon A-Peel'. The peduncle of 'DL1501' is shorter than the peduncle of 'Orange A-Peel'. The sepal of 'DL1501' is shorter than the peduncle of both reference varieties. The corolla of 'DL1501' has a smaller diameter than the corolla of 'Lemon A-Peel' and is shorter than the corolla of both reference varieties. The inner side of the corolla of 'DL1501' is dark purple red and brown red with a thin yellow orange margin along the corolla lobe whereas the inner side of 'Orange A-Peel' is orange and the inner side of 'Lemon A-Peel' is yellow. The outer side of the corolla of 'DL1501' is orange whereas the outer side of 'Orange A-Peel' is a darker orange and the outer side of 'Lemon A-Peel' is light yellow.

LEAF BLADE: triangular, sagittate base, irregularly dentate to scalloped margin
LEAF BLADE (UPPER SIDE): brown green (RHS N137A-B), absent or weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or very small extent of anthocyanin colouration on abaxial veins, very weak intensity of anthocyanin coloration on abaxial veins
PETIOLE: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration
PEDUNCLE: no anthocyanin colouration
CALYX: no anthocyanin colouration, light green
SEPAL: dense pubescence, broad ovate

Origin & Breeding History: 'DL1501' originated from naturally occurring branch mutation of the Thunbergia alata variety 'Arizona Glow'. The new variety was discovered in March 2015 in L'Assomption, Quebec by the breeder Mr. Denis Levac. 'DL1501' was selected in March 2015 based on its plant growth habit, branching characteristics, flower colour and flower colour pattern. Asexual reproduction of 'DL1501' was first conducted by vegetative cuttings in April 2015, in Ste-Adele, Quebec.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'DL1501' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring and summer of 2018 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 12, 2018. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 8, 2018. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
