Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Black and Blue'

Summary: The petiole of 'BBSAL09001' is longer than the petiole of 'Black and Blue'. The leaf blade of 'BBSAL09001' is shorter and wider than the leaf blade of 'Black and Blue'. The upper side of the leaf blade of 'BBSAL09001' is dark green whereas that of 'Black and Blue' is medium green. The inflorescence of 'BBSAL09001' is shorter than the inflorescence of 'Black and Blue'. The outer side of the corolla tube and upper lip of 'BBSAL09001' is dark violet whereas that of 'Black and Blue' is violet blue. The inner side of the lower lip of 'BBSAL09001' is violet with blue violet and light blue violet tones whereas the lower lip of 'Black and Blue' is violet blue with lighter violet blue to light violet blue tones.

CALYX (OUTER SIDE): black (RHS N186A) to brown green (RHS 146B), sparse pubescence
COROLLA TUBE (OUTER SIDE): dark violet (RHS 83B)
UPPER LIP (OUTER SIDE): dark violet (RHS 83B), dense pubescence
LOWER LIP: downwards attitude relative to corolla tube, inner side violet (RHS N82A) with blue violet (RHS 83C) and light blue violet (RHS 85C-D) tones, absent or very weak undulation of margin

Origin & Breeding History: 'BBSAL09001' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder, Mr. Brent D. Barnes, on October 13, 2014, in Bonsall, California, USA. The cross was conducted between the female parent, an unknown seedling designated '14SJ001-01' and the male parent, an unknown seedling designated '13SALB050-01'. The new variety 'BBSAL09001' was selected from the cross on December 29, 2014 based on its plant vigour, growth habit, flowering time, frequency of flowering, flower colour, flower colour pattern and garden performance. Asexual reproduction of 'BBSAL09001' was first conducted by vegetative tip cuttings on January 14, 2015 in Bonsall, California, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'BBSAL09001' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2018 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 12, 2018. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 10, 2018. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
