Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'BBSAL09001' (Rockin Deep Purple)

Summary: The plants of 'BBSAL00301' are shorter than those of 'BBSAL09001'. The leaf blade of 'BBSAL00301' is shorter than the leaf blade of 'BBSAL09001'. The outer side of the calyx of 'BBSAL00301' is brown purple whereas that of 'BBSAL09001' is dark brown to black. The outer side of the corolla tube of 'BBSAL00301' is violet whereas that of 'BBSAL09001' is dark violet. The outer side of the upper lip of 'BBSAL00301' is purple whereas the upper lip of 'BBSAL09001' is dark violet with violet tones. The inner side of the lower lip of 'BBSAL00301' is purple whereas the lower lip of 'BBSAL09001' is blue violet and violet.

LEAF BLADE: broadest part positioned strongly towards base, acute to acuminate apex, cordate base, medium to dark green upper side, no variegation, sparse pubescence, strong rugosity, strong glossiness, medium depth margin incisions, absent or very weak undulation of margin

INFLORESCENCE: few florets per node, absent or very few lateral branches, upright attitude of tip, very strong bract persistence
CALYX (OUTER SIDE): mainly brown purple (RHS 184A, as dark as RHS N186C), light green (RHS 145A) at base, sparse pubescence
UPPER LIP (OUTER SIDE): purple (RHS N74A), medium density pubescence
LOWER LIP: strongly downwards attitude relative to corolla tube, inner side purple (RHS N74A), strong recurving of margin
COROLLA TUBE (OUTER SIDE): violet (RHS N78A)

Origin & Breeding History: 'BBSAL00301' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder, Mr. Brent D. Barnes, on October 26, 2015, in Bonsall, California, USA. The cross was conducted between the female parent, a proprietary seedling designated '15SJ001-01', and the male parent variety 'BBSAL09001' (Rockin Deep Purple). The new variety 'BBSAL00301' was selected from the cross on July 26, 2016 based on its plant growth habit, branch strength, flower colour, leaf colour and garden performance. Asexual reproduction of 'BBSAL00301' was conducted by vegetative tip cuttings on July 28, 2016 in Bonsall, California, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'BBSAL00301' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring and summer of 2019 at BioFlora, Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 16, 2019. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 28, 2019. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
