Summary: The colour of the hairs on the middle third of the main stem of 'P28T08R' are light tawny whereas it is grey for 'CF60GR'. The plants of 'P28T08R' are shorter than those of '93Y05' and taller than those of 'CF60GR'. The intensity of brown colour of the pods of 'P28T08R' is medium whereas it is light for 'CF60GR'. The plants of 'P28T08R' are earlier maturing than those of '93Y05' and later maturing than those of 'CF60GR'.
HYPOCOTYL: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration
PLANT: indeterminate growth type, semi-erect growth habit, begins flowering and matures late to very late in the season
STEM: light tawny pubescence on middle third
LEAF: medium intensity of green colour
LATERAL LEAFLET: pointed ovate shape, medium size
POD: medium brown
SEED: medium to large size, spherical flattened shape, yellow ground colour of testa
FUNICLE: same colour as testa
DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to Phytophthora rot (Phytophthora megasperma f. sp. glycinea) and Soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines Races 3 and 14)
Origin & Breeding History: 'P28T08R' is the result of the cross between '93Y05' and 'YB28E09' conducted in 2008 in Salinas, Puerto Rico. The modified single seed descent method and pedigree method were used to develop the variety. The F1-F2 generations were grown in Salinas, Puerto Rico. The F3-F5 generations grown in Princeton, Illinois were advanced based on yield from single plant and progeny rows with single plant purification beginning in 2011. Wide area testing in the USA and Canada continued throughout 2012-2014. Selection criteria included yield, standability, tolerance to glyphosate herbicides and resistance to Phytophthora rot (Phytophthora megasperma f. sp. glycinea).
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'P28T08R' was conducted near Wallaceburg, Ontario during the 2015 growing season. It was planted in a RCB design and consisted of 3 replicates for each variety. Plots consisted of 2 rows 4 metres in length and a row spacing of 76 cm. Each plot was sown with approximately 180 to 250 seeds per replication. For each variety, the plant height was based on 30 measurements. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's T-test. The Canadian trial results were supported by the official technical examination report 201500133, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office, Beltsville, Maryland, USA.
